Student journalists set to fight press censorship on campuses

Against the backdrop of challenges faced by students journalists on various campuses in the country, campus journalists have established a union to discourage all forms of press censorship on campuses.

The union which will protect members rights from repugnant campus authorities will also serve as the umbrella body for all campus journalists in Nigeria.

National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ) will also serve as the regulatory body for journalism practice on campuses of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

It was no surprise when campus journalists from all over the country converged on the University of Ibadan for the first annual convention of the union to elect leaders who will steer the affairs of the union for 2017.

After series of elections, the NUCJ Electoral Committee Chairman, Olanrenwaju Oyedeji declared Ibrahim Alawode (UI) president of the union and Ifeoluwa Adediran (OAU) Senate President of the union.

Other winners for the National Executive Council posts include; Victor Ifegwu (UNN), South East Zonal Secretary; Kolawole Folarin (AAUA), ‎South West Zonal Secretary; Muhammed Akinyemi (UNILORIN), North Central Zonal Secretary; Azeez Abass (EACOED), ‎Financial Secretary and Ahmad Obanoyen (MAPOLY), ‎Publicity Secretary.

Others are Mubarak Abdulhameed (FUTA), ‎General Secretary; Aisha Shittu (UNILORIN), Vice President while Ifedayo Ogunyemi (MAPOLY), Eniola Samuels (RUGIPO) and Ifedayo Olorunfemi (FSS) emerged Deputy Senate President, Clerk and‎ Chief Whip of the senate.‎ ‎

Speaking at the convention, Oluwatope Alabi of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Osogbo charged the journalists to expose corrupt and sharp practices of campus authorities through their day-to-day reportage. He also encouraged them never to relent in giving their best to the profession.

Other speakers at the convention including Publisher of National Biographer, Dr. Raphael James and a lecturer of Fountain University, Usman Umarudeen urged them to use your pen to help the society and nation. The speaker also advised them to liaise with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other reputable bodies in the profession.

After their swearing-in, the executive and legislative arms of the union in their separate statements called for unity and corporation of members to achieve the set union goals.

The statement issued by Senator Adediran reads in part, "as intellectuals and sound minded pen asserters, let us ensure that we contribute our quota to the development of NUCJ. We should however, desist from unprofitable arguments that will cause setback to the union.

"I solicit our cooperation and commitment. As the parliamentary arm of the union, it essential that we work in unity. We should also embark on intellectual deeds that would boost the union," she added.

Campus journalists from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU), University of Nigeria Nnsukka (UNN), Federal School of Statistics (FSS), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta (MAPOLY), Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho (LAUTECH), Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), University of Ilorin among others.
